Nestled in the Southwest VA mountains, you’ll find Yarber Chair Company where three brothers work side by side – milling wood, then boiling it, bending it, shaping it into something suitable for a dining room suite or a rocking chair ready for a mother and child. The three brothers, Frank, Joe, and Carter, keep the business alive following in their father and grandfathers footsteps. All three brothers grew up making chairs, dining tables, rockers, entertainment centers, and other handcrafted pieces of furniture. It’s an art one grows up acquiring, not one that can be taught overnight.
Customers come from across Virginia- Roanoke, Richmond, Charlottesville. The brothers have shipped to New York and Ohio – anywhere word has traveled about their handcrafted style of furniture complete with the cane seating that is hand woven by one of the brothers. The main Yarber product is a dining room table style ladderback chair with either three or four rungs. They are built from either cherry, oak, or walnut.
It’s been known that the Yarbers will say “A craftsman doesn’t get fast at his craft…he just gets better at it.” They celebrated their 50th year anniversary in 1998 and still going strong.
